Application of Artificial Neural Networks to Power Plants

Introduction

Dramatic advances have been made in power plant Instrumentation and Control (I&C) since its inception in the 1930s. Innovative technologies and rapid advances in the field of digital processing, pattern recognition, and the application of AI techniques are paving the way for effective power plant I&C.

Today I&C technology focuses on

Modern power plant I&C system plays a major role in safe, efficient, and environmentally sound power plant operation. Power plants in Western Europe countries today have a service life of 40 years or more, and the trend is toward even longer life. Shorter service lives are being forecast for power plants in Eastern European countries. Extensive upgrading and retrofitting are frequently required to bring these plants up to the level of modern power plants. Due to the ages of these plants, it is expected that such modernization is necessary now, or will be necessary in the near future. Modern process control systems should therefore be installed even in older Eastern European power plants to significantly improve the level of quality of these plants. Plants I&C systems contribute to this trend by ensuring safe, environmentally sound, and efficient operation. [I12].

AI methods are currently being applied to a variety of I&C problems in order to aid plant operation and increase overall plant cost-effectiveness by

ANNs have beccome favourite candidates of I&C applications, especially where traditional solutions work ineffectively.

This section provides a survey of applications of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to Power Stations. The survey is organized as follows:
